Which Permit Do I Need?
Use this guide to determine which permit type best matches your project before completing the online permit application.
Residential Permit Types
Residential permits are for electrical work on structures that are lived in, including homes and qualifying farm structures that are part of a homestead. Non-living structures like detached garages, workshops, storage buildings, and similar structures will generally require a Small Commercial or Commercial permit instead.
Note: If you are unsure which category your project belongs in, please contact the office.
- Residential permits are $75 each.
- Most counties require an additional $25 county permit fee.
- Monroe County does not charge the county permit fee.
- Multiple permit types may be selected on one application to avoid paying the county permit fee more than once.
Residential Only Temporary
Used for temporary electrical service during construction and is intended only for temporary construction power.
Residential Only Rough In
Inspection requested after wiring has been installed but before insulation, drywall, or wall coverings are installed.
Residential Only Service Only
Requested once permanent service is ready to connect, allowing permanent power while remaining work continues.
Residential Only Final
Requested after all electrical work and construction are completed and ready for the final inspection.
Small Commercial Permit Types
Small Commercial permits are used for projects where the electrical contract value is less than $20,000 and generally include non-residential buildings such as shops, offices, workshops, garages, storage buildings, and similar commercial structures.
- Small Commercial permits are $100 each.
- Multiple permit types may be selected on one application.
Small Commercial Temporary
Temporary electrical service during construction.
Small Commercial Rough In
Inspection before walls are closed.
Small Commercial Service Only
Permanent electrical service connected before final inspection so construction can continue.
Small Commercial Final
Inspection after all electrical work has been completed.
Commercial Projects (Electrical Contract Over $20,000)
Applicants should not select “Commercial” on the online application. Instead, projects with an electrical contract value greater than $20,000 require applicants to contact the office directly. Commercial permit fees are calculated based on the electrical contract value. Please have the project location, electrical contract amount, contractor information, and project description available when you call.
